Firstly, working from home has the advantages in the areas of the daily commute, your own environment, minimizing costs such as lunches, transit, or even coffee costs.  But conversely, the daily commute can be time to plan, reflect, or even communicate. Most coworking locations will now help defray lunch and coffee costs with kitchen amenities & fridges, enabling meals brought from home and onsite coffee amenities.

Many companies are now moving towards allowing employees to ‘work from home’ or remotely by using online communication tools that indicate that the worker is logged on and engaged with other team members and the chose remains for the worker to choose the most productive environment for them.  Home is the obvious choice if children responsibilities are required however for virtually all other factors working from an office near to home has much better advantages for remote workers.

Working in Isolation is Tough

Well, it is difficult to work on your own – you miss the hum of working with others…  We think it hampers creativity somewhat and at the very least the ability to swap ideas or ways around roadblocks.  Working from home may seem like the most desirable thing however many a times it can prove to be really isolating. One of the most important benefits of working in creative office workspaces is that you are bound to meet different types of people which widens your knowledge and skill base.

Lack of Control

Working from home may be optimum for some but for the employer, working from an office means that the worker is somewhat connected to other workers and commerce which is more conducive to productivity than home based distraction. For this reason there is more control over the work environment in a creative shared office than a home environment.

Self Discipline And Energy Are Required.

Working from home requires a larger amount of energy to maintain productivity focus and self discipline to complete the work.   In an office environment these elements happen naturally with others engaged in similar activity so it is less draining on the worker to maintain focus.

Consider Opportunities to Collaborate and Skill Up

Working in a shared office environment produces opportunities to bump into people who are doing similar things differently and are often using tools of trade (digital or software tools) to get better results. I remember in my early days as a home based freelancer that the world around me was moving fast and I wasn’t keeping up with change. The transition to a workplace enabled me to see the software that I needed to adopt to overcome some client based problems leading to better opportunities for growth.

To cowork or not to cowork? That is the question. Whether or not to work from a coworking space is a tough question. It all depends entirely on you.

We all suffer from buyer apprehension before start the process of selecting a new office – location, price, storage, terms, legals, coworkers, neighbourhood and most importantly coffee sources.

But it never ceases to amaze me that most searchers of office space – such as new businesses or those relocating from serviced offices or fixed leases – seem to have a high level of anxiety and apprehension on getting the office selection 100% correct. This makes perfect sense if you are locking into a lease for 12-24 months or longer but with coworking the ability to have terms from a day, week, month, quarter and even trial days means that it is an extremely low risk purchase decision.

Indep Studio’s Business Community

The web has a great list of factors that you should consider when choosing a place.

Nathan Chan’s list on Foundr can be read here. His three main points on why to work in a coworking space are 1. that you can build your network, 2. that it won’t break the bank and 3. that you have all the talent at your fingertips.

Many other articles list closeness to home, price and the vibe but after seeing many businesses successfully use Independent Studios here in Prahran as a semi serviced office space the number one factor is “can I use my new office to dramatically improve my revenue”. If you answer yes, then it’s an easy choice to sign up for a month. If you answer no, to this question then you are probably better off where you are working from now.

My belief is that the only way to test this is to actually work out of the space for 10 minutes, 2 hours or whatever deal you can strike with the space.

So, if you are starting on the search process or are secured into a lease but are wondering whether a cowork space is right for your business you must have at the end of your checklist a mandatory action of ” I will work from this place tomorrow”. Nothing crystalises learning like experience.

The micro business community Flying Solo put up a great post regarding the benefits of coworking – especially when compared to working from home. Kevin Mallen makes 5 good points for making the move. Here is our interpretation of his five benefits of coworking: The first one is Motivation. Motivation comes when working around others. Makes sense. The second one is the Ability to Socialize and Share. Sharing is caring after all. And then of course there is the Generating of New Ideas. Working in a coworking space around other creatives is bound to spark some creative juices. The separation of Home and Life is a no-brainer when it comes to productive working. And finally we have Networking Opportunities. Sitting in an office with other professionals means networking galore.

We would suggest a sixth and possibly critical point – the Potential for Revenue Generation.  Approximately 30% of our members at Independent Studios are actively trading between each other. This is something we attempt to kick off but let them manage after this point.  When you scope out your next location ask about the sixth point. It may make all the difference to your business.
